Hindu religion is a very vast religion and was not started by any prophet. It is considered as eternal religion. So unlike so many other religions there is not one major religious book as Bible in Christianity ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ in Sikh religion or Koran in Islam.
Our oldest religious and most holy books are Vedas These Vedas are called APAURUSAYA which means not from any human and are directly heard and so also called sruti means heard. These were collected by Rishies and restored in any convenient form. The oldest samhitas is Rigveda and believed to be around 1500-1000 BCE old.
Four Vedas are:-
Rigveda
Yajurveda
Samveda
Atharvveda
There are four Upaveda also which name:-
Ayurveda --(Related with medical science and body ailments. Linked with Rigveda)
Dhanurveda- (Linked with archery and associated with yajurveda)
Gandharvaveda – (Linked with Music and associated with samveda)
Shastrashastra Veda – (Linked with art of fighting or military, associated with Atharvaveda.)
Aisde from Vedas there are Puranas which are 18 in numbers.
